|The Challenges and Rewards of Foster Parenting Special Needs Children|
Event Type: Adult|
Age Group(s): adult
Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Time: 8:30 PM
Every day, traumatized children are being taken into protective custody by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services; victims of emotional and physical abuse and neglect. Until these children can return home to a safer environment and become stable enough to cope with their personal challenges, the Juvenile Court mandates that they be placed temporarily in foster homes. There is a shortage of qualified foster homes to provide safe, structured and nurturing care for these special needs children and youth.
Marc Bermann, a foster parent recruiter, trainer and community respite worker for Jewish Child and Family Services, will share valuable information for individuals and couples who may be interested in becoming licensed foster parents of special needs children and youth. Marc will highlight the following topics, provide detailed handouts, and allow time for Q & A, during this presentation:
-How do children enter the “child welfare system”?
-What is a “special needs” diagnosis?
-What behavioral challenges does a foster parent face?
-What specifically is involved in the licensing process?
-How can parents, both bio and foster, set better limits, goals and rewards for their children?
